Air Force Pilot Training: Phase I

Phase 1: Academics and Simiulators

CHeclist

And so it begins...

Academics is the start of pilot training at its primary level. From here, students will learn the baics of Air Force aviation as well as the systems and components necessary to fly the T-6 Texan, their Phase II aircraft. The program is set up in such a way that the students both have instructor lead classes as well as computer based training courses. They are tested on every subject and graded on a Pass-Fail system if they score below an 85%. These grades will be part of their total overall "rank" in pilot training which we will talk about later. Academics does not play a huge part in the ranking system but it is still a signigicant number and the first time the students are being objectively measured.

Also in this phase of training you will begin simulator missions to familiarize yourself with the T-6 systems, including ground operations, starting the engine and basic flight procedures and checks. To the right is a small cutout of the abbreviated checklist that a student will learn to memorize in phase II. After this phase, a student has the basic skills to move on and begin flying the aircraft under Instructor Pilot (IP) supervision. Academics and simulators have not stopped however, no, they will continue and become even more difficult as one progresses through training.
